Copper (1mm Plate)
Concept

On the theme of creating onigawara (demon tile), I started the project with a positive attitude: 'I want to make onigawara not to repel bad luck, but to bring good fortune.'
Onigawara is used as decoration on the roofs of traditional Japanese architecture to ward off evil spirits, with ogres and fearsome beasts represented in the form of motifs.
I chose 'teeth' as the main motif, which can be seen when smiling, from my motto: 'fortune comes in by a merry gate'. Hoping for a future where smiles and teeth can be seen, which have been hidden behind masks due to the spread of infectious diseases.

A glimpse of happiness.

People are always feeling and thinking about something deep inside their smiles.
Emotions are in the eyes and always speak the truth.
The large eyes placed in counterpoint to the teeth, the symbol of the smile, represent humanity, which is always looking at something, even when smiling.

Shape Making
The structural changes in copper caused by annealing and the metal's extensibility by tapping are used to transform a flat surface into a three-dimensional object.

The shape was created by constantly sorting out complex conditions in my mind such as the properties of the metal, three-dimensional thinking and interpretation, the angle at which the hammer is struck and its strength, the shape of the backing metal, and so on.

Five different hammers with different shapes of striking surfaces were used to create the surface texture.
No polishing process is used at all, everything is done by hammering.

About Finishing
I used sulphide colouring to create a sulphide film on the surface of the copper.
This changes the colour of the copper and enhances the shadows visible in the surface light reflections and fine textures, and emphasises the three-dimensionality of the work.
